As Amos fell off his chair, a huge bang echoed through the room. Mr. Gagliardi, who was writing on the blackboard in the front of the classroom, whirled around as if it was the figure skating championships.

“Amos did you perhaps sat on too much butter this morning?” Everybody’s laughter made it seem like some sort performance.

            When the class settled down which felt like five hours, Mr. Gagliardi went back to his work. He stood tall but not close to overpowering. His short black hair stood on an edge and danced. The black sweatshirt shone coldly. Usually when you see someone tall and muscular, you’d be thinking to run off shouting “Mommy!” But no, it’s not the case with this amazing teacher.

            Hey, now you’re wondering, a favourite teacher is very much different from a role model. I’ll tell you why I chose him: 1) He is kind. 2) It’s never frustration or anger that comes at you when something is done wrong. 3) And last and not least, his attitude. You should know that he is so welcoming. If you are wondering if I’m the only one who appreciates him, then you are very wrong! He is such an attraction at the school. I think no one can just walk past him without saying hi.

            “I think what I try to do is to use humor and be funny. I’m not afraid to act silly. And the other thing I try to do is to listen to what other people have to say. I like to give everybody a fair chance to share their thinking, to express their thing and put forth their ideas,” he said during an interview with me recently.

            Mr. Gagliardi is now on his fourth year at Edenrose so we both came to the school during the same school year. I wanted him to be my classroom teacher since grade one. Why? Because he is the best teacher in the world!

I remember the time when my mom and I had a fight about something really small like who said the correct answer to a question. I was very sad, but I learned that nobody’s perfect, and we all learn from mistakes. We never apologized to each other, but we know everything is alright between us. This is why we celebrate Mother’s Day─ to tell your mom that you appreciate everything they have done for. As a kid, we don’t have a lot of money to buy expensive gifts or take our parents to trips, but here are some ideas that might work:

1. Make a card

Yes, this is simple, but put your heart (not literally) into writing it. Choose your words wisely, instead just saying “I love you, mom,” maybe you can write a poem or some details that you remember the most.

2. Make a collage.
Collages are good to refresh your mom’s memories on the good times you spent together. Select some pictures you have with your mom and write a neat caption under each one, thanking your mother for the good times. It will definitely bring tears in her eyes.

3. Buy small gifts.

This will not cost a lot. Buy something like hand sanitizers, and lotion, and make-up, earrings and other small things. I recommend buying things from Bath and Body Works because their fragrances are super good and they last longer than you think! At Bath and Body Works, you can create a package of a pair, and it’s cheap so what you can do is make a package, add a small card and you’re done.

4.Buy a book.

Buy a great book for your mother is a good idea. First, you need to know your mom’s “taste” in books. What does she like the most? Adventure, Fantasy, Beauty or Romance? Aside from buying the book, you also need to give her time to read. So I suggest you take up a couple chores during that day and give her time to read books and drink tea!

5.Make a basic craft.

This is super-simple and plus, it’s DIY (do-it-yourself) and you get to be creative! Make a necklace, a bracelet, an art canvas, rainbow loom, anything related to DIY. Your parents will absolutely love it because YOU made it and THEY love YOU.

6. Invite your parents to a restaurant.

This may costs a lot. Try to bring your parents somewhere that they always wanted to go, or somewhere they didn’t expect. I personally think that everything that you would end up paying under $40 will be fine. They will enjoy it a lot. I would not suggest a romantic restaurants because they always tends to be expensive!

7. Buy some flowers.

You will be thinking “this is easy,”. Every flower has a language or meaning. I strongly recommend Primroses because they mean ‘I can’t live without you’ and also Daffodil is a good one because it means the sun is always shining when I’m with you. You can choose your own flowers by going on http://thelanguageofflowers.com/ because it gives you almost all flower meaning.

8. Bring them to a spa

This is not common, but you know, all woman need to attend a spa, and want a spa, so they can relax instead of working hard at home. They will experience a trip of a lifetime, and enjoy relaxation.

9. Make breakfast in bed

My family does this every Mother’s day. My dad and I wake super early and we make toast, eggs, fruits and milk. We bring it upstairs and we wake her up and wish her a happy Mother’s day. I suggest picking her favourite food and fruit to surprise her. Think of what to say, to surprise her, but don’t scare her, that might ruin her day

10. Give them hugs and kisses

Yes. I mean it. This costs lots of love. We need to understand how love is important to us and the world. Our life is not to give presents on special days, it’s to give love! So give them a hug or kiss, to show that presents are just extra, and love is always a gift. Thank your mom for giving you a life, letting you do the things you like, and mostly, showing love and care to you and your family. So be happy you are on land and tell your mom “I love you”.

Dear Santa,

How are you doing? I am not going to tell you what I want for Christmas. I want to ask you some questions about your life and your present system.

I’d love to know about your elf and toy system. Is it true, like a lot of people say, that you have elves making toys for you? If there are elves working for you, are you sure they actually are elves, because I think you have mistaken them with a lot of unusually short people! Elves are mythical creatures, so maybe it’s just a name for them. I hope so!

Does anyone know about your true identity, other than your wife and your workers? I am actually really curious about your age, not trying to be rude or anything. Books say that your present-giving and popularity must have started around a century ago! Hardly anyone could live that long! Do you have any sort of power that keeps you alive? If you do, that’s amazing!

What do you do during the rest of the year? If you have kids, do you send them to school? What do you do during the summer? Do you go ice fishing? Do you supervise the toy-making process all year long? Do you leave home and pretend to be a normal man with a job by using a disguise? You once told me you watch the Cherry Gumball Hockey Games, and that they are cool. I’d like to know where they are so I can see them too! You can’t watch them all the time, though, can you?

This is all I really want to ask you, and please answer all of my questions properly, especially the address of where you can find the Cherry Gumball Hockey Games!

Dear Santa Claus...

My name is Sunni Zhou and I am 11 years old. I am so
excited for Christmas because you get to come to my house and give me presents! But that’s not the only reason; I also get to spread Christmas joy to everyone!

I have been thinking about what I want for this year’s Christmas (2013) since last year because I was so happy to get so many great presents such as littlest pet shops, stationery, and a white board for me to keep track of my schedules at school. Everyone grows more mature every year, which means that this year, I don’t want toys as much. But that’s ok, because I’ve found some other hobbies I truly love: reading, singing, and cooking.

It would really be wonderful if I could get the “Lord of the Rings” series and the “Harry Potter” series for a reading update. I read “Twilight” but the message isn’t really clear. I mean, why would a girl give up everything just for a monster boy?

I have sung for almost all my life now. I never thought there could be something related to singing for a gift, but a while ago I was doing some research and found out that there is a singing machine and karaoke system with disco lights. The picture on
Wal-Mart’s website looked really fantastic. It would also be nice if I could get that.

I love eating and my parents and grandparents make the best food ever. But, I eat it every day so I get sick of it, which led me to commit to the responsibility of cooking my own food, but that didn’t really turn out well. I am not allowed to use the pan or
stove; in fact I’m not even allowed to go near it. That’s why I can’t really cook, but I did some magazine reading and there was an advertisement that was promoting an easy bake ultimate oven. It said it will teach you how to bake cookies and cakes. I
thought to myself, well now I’ll be able to finally cook for myself if only Santa would get it for me. I know that Christmas isn’t really about presents or free toys; it’s about the holiday spirit, and I know I definitely won’t get everything I want. I think many kids these days who don’t believe in you and holiday legends are crazy, because if they
don’t, all that does is ruin the holiday spirit. There’s really nothing good about NOT believing. Nobody can ever tell me whether I should believe in you or not because I know you’re always in my heart.

Add color to winter’s white blank canvas!

You might be thinking, how can one dress up fashionably in such a season
where you have to wear layers and layers of clothing? Just because winter coats and
pants are getting in the way doesn’t mean your outfit has to be boring.

1. Southwestern and Floral Prints

Southwestern and Floral prints are so in this winter! At first I thought twice about buying a new cardigan with these kinds of prints, but to my surprise, it goes with just about anything and it’s on everything! Leggings, shirts, cardigans and sweaters! Pair a printed sweater with black leggings or grey pants, top it off with a white scarf and a brightly colored beanie and you got yourself a casual outfit, which you can wear if you’re going to a friend’s party or the last day of school before winter break.

Tip: Don’t wear a top that’s printed and a bottom piece that’s printed too! It’s nice to have a little contrast.

2. A-line dresses

Going to a party? A family reunion? These are my problems every winter. I have a lot of cousins, and every day during winter break there’s a different kind of celebration. A-line dresses and floral printed ones are still in, even though flowers aren’t really blooming anymore. Striped and polka-dotted dresses are really great for both casual and formal parties. Wear a black or white cardigan over this cutie of a dress and you’ll be looking cute and dressed for the occasion.

3. Army green, burgundy & khaki

Army green, burgundy and khaki are colours that I mostly see in the mall these days. Especially for young boys. Boys aren’t really as fashionable as girls, but I bet they like to look handsome and cute too! So for all the boys out there, wearing a plaid or striped shirt underneath a green or navy blue jacket would look good with any pair of jeans. Add a pair of combat boots or converse and you’re all set!

2. Squid
A squid costume will look very scary and is very creative. Not a lot of people decide to be a squid so you will look very original. Use a double layer of fabric and stuff it with cotton or wool. Sew pieces of fabric around the body for the tentacles.

Aang is a popular character from the TV series, “Avatar: The Last Airbender”. It is a really easy costume to make. Wear a yellow or orange shirt, brown pants and a brown belt. You’re ready to go!

3. Mummy
If you’re looking for a cool, easy and cheap costume to make, choose the mummy!
Wrap yourself in toilet paper and use mud to look old and dusty. Remember to leave
air holes at the eyes, nose and mouth and wear brown clothes underneath. You’re
ready to go!

5. Deformed Alien
This deformed alien costume is very creative and versatile. There are many different ways to make this costume
fit anyone’s unique
preferences. First, stuff your clothes with paper or cloth to make one side bigger than the other. It is best to wear one shirt size and pants bigger. Next, wear one shoe bigger than the other. Then, carry two different toy guns – water guns work well!

4. Hunchback
The hunchback costume is easy to make and fun to do. It is a hilarious costume because it looks ridiculous. When making it, use a brown shirt and stuff the back with paper or cloth. It is usually worn with dull looking colours such as grey, brown, black or red. These colours are used for a peasant look as the character is always portrayed as a poor street urchin.

6. Flower
This flower costume has a very simple concept. Anybody can be a flower - even adults! When making it, use yellow silk or cotton around your head. For the body, you need to wear green clothing as the stem and leaves. Petals for your arms can be any colour that you desire.

8. Zombie

Zombies are always
looking freaky and
are another easy to make costume choice. Wear any clothing you want and dust yourself with dirt. Use red paint for the blood effect and don’t forget to walk funny!

7. Vampire

- the vampire is a scary
costume that is also easy
to make. Use a black bed
sheet as your cape and
wear a white dress shirt
and black pants. Use red
paint to give the effect

9. Ghost

This ghost costume is the easiest to make. You usually need a long, white
sheet like a bed sheet or blanket. Make sure you cut holes for the eyes. Also, use white powder on the whole
body for a ghostly appearance!

10. Robot
The robot costume is a very fascinating
invention. It is strong, powerful and
smart. A lot of boxes and tubes will be
used for the body. Glue an old keyboard
and black glass on the body part of the
box. Make sure to use a lot of glitter
for buttons. The glitter can also be
used to make the armor shiny.

During the years, kids will get free candy on Halloween which will last them till Christmas. When Christmas comes around, kids will get candy from their stockings or from their relatives, which isn't much. That candy and maybe some leftover Halloween candy will last you till Easter. But between Easter and Halloween, there is a huge amount of time for your Easter candy to carry over till Halloween. This is why there should be a holiday somewhere between Easter and Halloween, where kids can get free candy.

In Christmas, Santa Claus is depicted riding the Reindeer sleigh, delivering presents to children. The candy holiday should have the national animal from the children’s country to deliver the candies. They should be delivered directly to the children’s kitchen tables, ready to be eaten. During this holiday, only healthy candy will be served. The kids will also get a bottle of mouth wash to help with their dental hygiene. After eating these candies, the kids must use the special mouthwash to clean their mouth. If they don’t do that, the other candies on the table will magically disappear.

If the child was good from “National Candy Day” till Halloween, the national animal from each country will give you more candies before Halloween. This holiday will not only give children candies to last until Halloween, but it also teach children to be good. This is why I think we should create a holiday for giving kids free candies between Easter and Halloween.

The basic idea of the assignment was to get young journalist to speak about a random topic that they had picked from a hat pile blindly. Some were interesting. Some were bizarre. Some were hilarious. We will let you decide. Here is what they had to say about their random topics:

Divorce - " In the game of LIFE, if you land on divorce, it's a terrible thing. You lose a turn and lose all your money. Not a good thing." William (Age 13)

I started the game of Go in January 2012. Go (aka Weiqi in Chinese or Baduk in Korean) is a game of territory. Go is interesting because it is so vague and abstract on terms of good moves. Because of this, computers will never go further than humans. Go’s strategy is all about style, how you want the game’s flow to go, your depth in technique and reading ahead and your practice. Go is approximately 4000 years old, one of the oldest board games along with shogi (Japanese Chess), which is about 3700 years old.

Go is a game where there are 361 points on the board. You need to try to get more points than your opponent, playing
as either Black or White. When you surround all four sides of an opponent’s piece, you remove it from the board as a
point. After every place on the board is filled, you count the points that you have surrounded. However, as Black would
get the privilege of the first play, White would have compensated points (6.5 points to eliminate draws).

This is how I started. I was in school one day, and I had all my work done, so I got bored. I picked up the first book I saw, and it turned out to be a manga called Hikaru No Go. Manga stories are Japanese comics that were developed in the late 19th century. Manga is usually in black and white, but there are many colourful versions that exist now. I started reading the comic about 6 months before I started playing. After I got a little further into the manga, I couldn’t really follow along anymore. So then, I started trying to learn online how to play Go. In the beginning, I thought the rules and play were really simple and I thought I could master it very quickly.

Then I got interested in the actual game; I decided to find out as much information as I could on the internet about tactics and strategies. That’s when I found out that Go was actually a very complicated board game.

Coincidentally, I happened to have a friend in my class who was stronger at Go than me at that time. He taught me some of the basics and played with me whenever there was free time. At that time, he was able to beat me easily, on a 19x19 Go board.

Soon, I was looking online for any free audio lectures I could find. After little success, my parents found out about the Golden Key Cultural Centre, a place that offers Go lessons in Mississauga, during the month of May, 2012. On June 18th, I started taking Go lessons in the beginner class. After ten weeks, I advanced to the intermediate class, along with other classmates. Around that time, I also started playing online Go on the KGS Kiseido Go Server. With the useful lessons from the Go teachers, I gained more strength and soon, I was able to beat my friend easily thanks to the professional lessons I received. Now, I still learn Go at the Golden Key Cultural Centre and look forward to it every week.

Hello, greetings to anyone who just happens to be or is intentionally reading this. My name is Richard Bao. I’m 12 years old, in the grade six. My birthday is on April 9th. I attend Thomas Street Middle School. I live in Mississauga,
and some of my hobbies are listening to rap music and a little bit of classical music. I also like playing soccer, playing Go, and I like to hang around with my friends. I’m pretty different from others because I have never wished to be someone else in my life. If anyone has a problem with that, then buy a happy meal.

Do you know of another area to throw out garbage?

Well, if you guessed recycling, you are correct! Recycling means reusing things that can be used again. Recycling is a way not to waste everything you have. If we don’t, then we could run out of our supplies. Well, how do we recycle?

There are many things you need in the recycling process. You need a
recycling bin, paper products, recycling carts, energy, raw materials, a pulper, a paper machine, and a cone-shaped cylinder. These are things required in the process of recycling.

Firstly, if one uses a paper product, DO NOT scrunch it up. Throw it in
the recycling bin, because it is better for the environment.

Next, the paper product travels to the recycling center. They trade paper
products with cash.

Then, residents use recycling carts to take the paper products. After that,
they clean and separate the paper products.

Later, it is taken to the paper mill. There is a pulper that chops the paper
down into small pieces. The heat shrinks it more, and the old paper changes to pulp.

Mills clean the pulp in the large cone-shaped cylinders, where it gets spun. Things that are not mushy, like staples, go in the garbage after it is removed.

Sometimes, the pulp must go through a “pulp laundering” operation, which
is called deinking. This process is used to remove in and sticky stuff, like
glue. There are two types of deinking: washing and flotation. The process of washing is when little areas of ink are removed. Flotation is when larger areas of ink and sticky stuff are removed with air bubbles.

The pulp is beaten to make the recycled fibres swell, making paper. They will be bleached with hydrogen peroxide, chlorine dioxide, and oxygen, to make it whiter and brighter.

The clean pulp is ready to be paper now. The pulp is mixed with water and chemicals, to make it 99.5% water. There is a huge, flat wire the pulp goes on and it moves very quickly. The machine that does this is called the paper machine. Then, a person takes out the water in the pulp and heated
metal rollers dry the watery paper and a coating smoothes out the paper.

Finally, the finished paper will be removed from the paper machine. One roll can be thirty feet wide and weighs twenty tons. The paper will be cut into smaller pieces. As a result, the recycled paper is made.

Recycling is important to learn because the garbage spreads toxic waste everywhere, which is poisonous. We wouldn’t want to spread toxic waste everywhere. Recycling is a safe way to throw out all your scrap paper.

industry for a long time, and it’s not faltering

denim cutoffs and a straw fedora to add a sweet, girly twist to your look. Go the extra mile by finishing off this outfit with a pair of sassy sunglasses, or, if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, try a pair of lace shorts!

Skater skirts, affectionately coined circle
skirts are a fun alternative to the classic A-line. For those of you out there that prefer some more edgy duds, one of these , a unique graphic print top and some chelsea booties are the perfect new pieces to add to your wardrobe.

A huge trend this spring/summer is going
to be stripes. Seen on runways everywhere from Tommy Hilfiger to Marc Jacobs. Small stripes, big stripes, fat stripes, thin stripes and everything in between, it is going to be stripes galore this season. Try a pair of pinstriped leggings for an edgy, effortless vibe.
