Earth Hour - Music Style

Wendy Interviewing Paul Huang
On March 23rd, the second annual lowcarbon unplugged concert was held to celebrate Earth Hour. The message to protect the environment was delivered though music. Amidst the crowded audience was Paul Huang, the founder of Green Life newspaper and the organizer of this event.

Despite his busy schedule, Huang gave Voice K an image of a low-carbon concert.

“This concert is very special, because we don’t use electricity. Instead, we incorporated alternate energy sources such as solar energy, batteries, and back-up energy.”

At 8:30 the concert begins, and all energy consuming devices will be unplugged. This is an opportunity to gather as a community towards a common goal: to protect the earth.

“I want to promote the idea that normal people can become the protectors of the earth. We can achieve great things when united,” says Huang. “With these motives, I hope for a green earth which our current advancements of our generation won’t harm the next. Earth Hour - it’s a great time to create awareness and to develop energy saving habits.”

It was special indeed. When the concert kicked off, the audience held up their tiny LED lights and swayed to the music. “You see these lights? They look like regular ones, but they’re all LED lights! There’s enough energy stored inside to keep them shining from ten days to a month. I think this is the path we should take to make eco-friendly energy the new big thing,”Huang said, as he pointed at our hand-held lights.

Family Day at Habourfront Centre

By William Yang & Sunni Zhou
On Sunday, February 17th, 2013, there was an event at Harbourfront Centre located in Downtown Toronto. There were lots of family and kids’ activities, and all of them were free to the public. Almost everyone was there and, it was one of the biggest events we have ever seen.
Kids were crowded at every single booth. We were glad that we went early, so we didn’t need to wait in long lines to participate in any activities. The activities were all different and unique. It went from milk testing, (decide which milk brand tastes better) to snow castle building (I really admire the staff who were standing there for hours in the freezing weather).

The most awesome and fantastic thing was... FREE COTTON CANDY! Listen up kids! That was a once in a lifetime chance, I mean who gives FREE cotton candy out? We usually beg our parents to buy us a bag in a Disney show, or we have to exchange it with our hours of hard play and collection of tickets we gained through Chuck E. Cheese games. See the picture; we had a rack of cotton candy marked FREE.

Some events were:

• Skating/skating performances/Le Patin Libre at 12:30 pm and 3:00 pm.
• Snow castle building at 11:00 am-5:00 pm.
• Street Dance Canada Competitions at 12:00 pm, 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm.
• Vibrating toothbrush painting at 11:00 am-5:00 pm.
• Gelatin art engraving (they called it magical painting) at 11:00 am-5:00 pm.
• Lego playing and building at 11:00 am-5:00 pm. There is also a feature LEGO® building class by the LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Toronto’s Master Model Builder!
• Museums: A showcase of work created by some of the youngest – and most talented artists around.

There were many more free activities available all day long. The one that I paid most attention to was the street dancing.

Street Dancing

The Canadian Street Dance Championships (CSDC) is an annual competition that qualifies dancers to compete at the world street dance championships. It features categories for kids, youth and adults in solo, duo, crew, as well as battle competitions in hip hop, popping, locking, break-in’, crump and house. There were many professional dancers that practiced before the competition, but there were also many audience members who volunteered to show their wacky and cool moves. During the performance, there was a DJ, who was playing awesome tunes and pop music to match the style of dance the dancers were doing. In the middle of the dance, the MC asked, “Are there any children in the audience who want to show their break dancing moves?” After that little speech, everyone started calling each other’s names, but only two little kids went up. One of them was a girl that looked about 7-9 years old and the other one looked like he was around 3-5 years old. After that, the MC called all the adults to come up. The winner got one free ticket to the national street dance competition.

Gelatin Art Engraving:

The gelatin art engraving was really fun. There was a medium sized plastic box that was filled with gelatin, toothbrush-like paintbrushes, cups of different colours of paint, white paper, and an object that looked like a comb. The instructor said, “That is the most important thing in all of these tools.” It was something they used to spread the paint in the gelatin. The instructions are simple.

First, take a paintbrush and dip it in paint.

Next, shake/wiggle the paintbrush over the gelatin so the drops of paint could fall in the gelatin and make little dots. Now, repeat step 1 and use a different colour.

After, repeat all of these steps until the box is filled with different coloured dots. Then, take the comb-like thing and spread (only using the tip with the spikes) the gelatin any way you want.

Now, take a piece of paper, and gently place it on the gelatin. After a few seconds, gently lift it off.

Finally, take your picture and hang it somewhere to dry. You can definitely make a new one after the first one. When you’ve dried it and it’s hard, it will look something like this. The fun part about this art is that you can design the gelatin any way you want with any colours you want. You can even make a smiley face on the gelatin.

LEGOLAND Discovery Centre

There was another wonderful place called LEGOLAND Discovery  Centre. This wasn’t just any Lego centre; it was a centre with building classes by the LEGOLAND Discovery Centre’s Toronto’s Master Model Builder!

Rhyme Timez

At around 4:00 p.m. we went to watch a show called RhymeTimez. At the show there was a really crazy man
who kept on dancing with flashing lights everywhere in the background. The show was about random characters having rap battles. The first round was a cat vs. a dog. In the end the dog won the match because the cat barely ever rhymed. The second round was Sunny Sunshine against Old Man Winter. This battle was the weirdest because Old Man Winter looks like a huge hairball and he thinks he is a little kid. Old Man Winter totally owned Sunny Sunshine. The last fight was the turtle vs. the hare. This round was really close but the turtle won.

“My favourite battle at RhymeTimez was the turtle vs. the hare. I voted for the turtle because I love Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle,” said a young boy named Josh, who claimed to have gone to every single event at the Harbourfront Centre.

Hockey Game Night: Mississauga Steelheads vs. Sudbury Wolves

On December 16, 2012, Voice K had the opportunity to attend a hockey game at the Hershey Centre.

“It was a tough loss, but hopefully after Christmas we’ll come back stronger”

It was the third period; the Steelheads were down 2-1 and were desperately trying to make a comeback. If they could have scored 2 more goals, they would have had a chance at winning the game. The crowd was on their toes, but as the goal buzzer went off for the third time for the Sudbury Wolves (making it 3-1), we knew it was over.

Writers of the Voice K magazine were invited to attend the Mississauga Steelheads vs. the Sudbury Wolves OHL game at the Hershey Centre on December 16th, 2012.
As budding magazine writers, we got a tour of the arena, including a visit to the media room! We were even fortunate enough to interview a player on the teelheads team.

I got to interview a player named Bobby MacIntyre; although they had lost the game, he seemed happy to do the interview. He admits that although it was a tough loss, they had played well during the first 2 periods which had included a goal from Stuart Percy. MacIntyre has great hopes that the Steelheads will come back stronger after the Christmas break. (Later, the team will win the game that took place on December 30th against the Brampton Battalion). When I asked him how he felt about the support of his fans, he said, “Great! They come out every year and support our team.” He also encourages people of all ages to watch and enjoy their games.

To conclude, although the team suffered a loss on December 16th, they are back stronger than ever. The members of Voice K and I are very thankful to have had an opportunity such as this. So what are you waiting for? Come out and support the Mississauga Steelheads at their next game!

It was a grand experience and I had lots of fun watching the match. This time, the game was played between the Mississauga Steelheads and the Sudbury Wolves. Let me tell you a secret… I live in Mississauga.

So now, you could probably guess which team I support, right?

I was so excited upon walking into the hockey hall. There were so many people waiting for the game. As a reporter, I was allowed to sit in the best place to enjoy the game. I sat in the broadcast room! In this large room, I was able to watch the grueling match with a great view. It is really nice to
not only watch the game, but to also listen to the wonderful commentator. Otherwise, I would not have understood how the teams performed.

I think that this kind of sport should belong to adults rather than children. My brother and I began learning how to play hockey about 10 months ago. We both enjoy playing it. However, if you compared us with the players from the real match, our practice seems like a mere boy’s game. We play so nice and quietly, whereas the professionals play so fierce and agile.

Another game that I play is soccer. Like the game of hockey, soccer players must use teamwork as well. However, there are some differences between soccer and hockey. First of all, hockey requires more skill in order to keep your stability and balance, because you are skating on the ice. Secondly, you have to coordinate your arms and legs. The best way to do this is to keep them together; otherwise, you cannot play hockey properly. But soccer is different, as you only need to pay attention to your position on the field. Also, in soccer, your legs are more important than your arms. Actually, according to the rules, you cannot use your arms at all in a soccer game unless you are the goalkeepers.

Well, it is time to talk about the results. My favourite team ended up losing the game, so the Sudbury Wolves bit the Mississauga Steelheads this time. I hope our Steelheads won’t forget the pain and can bite back in the near future. Despite the results, I had a great and memorable time at the hockey game.
