Voice K Journalist Wins Silver Key Award for Scholastic Arts and Writing Award 2014 -International Region

2/20/2014

Voice K journalist, Michelle Zeng, has recently won the Silver Key for Scholastic Arts and Writing in the Science Fiction Category. Michelle's "Hunter" is an intense short fiction story about a mysterious little girl and the hunter who found her in the forest. Below is Michelle's experience in writing the story. Her experience is a story worth to be shared, as it shows an excellent story's conception, and a young writer's inspiration, determination and hard work.

Michelle Zeng (Age 12) Silver Key Award Winner

To be honest, I had never planned on ever writing The Hunter; I had absolutely no plot ideas and no motivation to write anything longer than a role play post. The Hunter was originally a random, rather inane piece of writing that I had been using to improve on my descriptive writing skills.
It started out as a short description of a forest at night; then inspiration hit me and I continued on writing, eventually adding in the first character; a hunter prowling the midnight woods. My fingers took over my mind by then as I started adding more and more details, eventually incorporating a young girl into the story. This short drabble-type writing, originally just a descriptive paragraph, actually managed to turn into a thing with some sort of plot; a hunter in the woods at night, hunting deer, eventually finding a girl who has lost her way home.

How did the supernatural aspect of the story come into being, you may ask? I personally am not very sure. For the past few days prior to writing The Hunter, however, I had indulged in reading things like paranormal claims by people over the internet, as well as reading horror stories on sites such as Creepypasta. I think that the little ghost girl in the story was mostly inspired by all those legends of White Ladies that can be found all over the world.

By definition, White Ladies are women and girls that have lost something – be it a husband, children, or some other valuable sort of object – and have set it upon themselves to search for that lost item, even if it takes them forever to do so. The girl in The Hunter may very well be a sort of White Lady, doomed to wander in the forest in the eternal search for her home, but what the girl truly is – well, I can leave it to your imaginations.

I rewrote The Hunter two times before deciding to send it off to the Scholastic writing competitions. It is probably the best short story I have ever written, as I rarely write anything beyond fan-fictions, poems or role-play posts. I had mixed feelings regarding the final outcome of The Hunter; pride, as I loved the way the story ended up in the end, and apprehension for the competition. I was going up against amazing high-school students from gifted art schools like Etobicoke School of Arts; what kind of chance did I have?

When I got the email announcing that the Regional International winners had been decided, I scrolled through the PDF file anxiously, scanning for a name that I wasn’t even sure would be on there. But finally, at the end of the second-last page, there was my name: Michelle Zeng, author of The Hunter, had won a Silver Key award! I must admit, I shamelessly screamed aloud.

Even though my Silver Key award means that I cannot advance any further in the competition, I am still immensely proud of this achievement; this is my first time entering a competition as big as Scholastic, and the fact that I actually managed to get an award really means something to me. Either way, it’s given me hope, and the knowledge that regardless of age and experience, even a normal literature-obsessed girl like me has the chance to reach high with my passion.

Graduation Day. Diplomas. Gowns. Pictures. Flowers. Happy memories of friends and stressful studies. All ends with new beginnings. Voice K had showcased the new generation of future kid journalists at their personal grad ceremony. This event was held on July 23, 2013 at 6pm in the Dixie Bloor Neighbourhood Centre.

Teachers, families and the journalists were bustling with excitement in the beginning of the ceremony. A camera crew from Fairchild TV was also present ready to capture the special moment for the graduated journalists. The ceremony began with a short film of the journalists’ field trip to the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto. Next, Voice K’s Editor-in-Chief, Joanna Liu started off with an open speech to the delighted kid journalists and parents, emphasizing their hard work and dedication to journalism. After the speech, Liu began handing out each journalist’s diplomas and their contributions during their time in the program.

Then, the festivities began with balloons, games and candies. There was a lot of laughter and merriment as each journalist talked about their fun journey into pursuing journalism. There were plenty of pictures being taken with the journalists, families and teachers. Later, the ceremony concluded with food and drinks where everyone congregated with each other to reminisce. The event was a huge success as many journalists were sad to see it come to an end. A special thanks was contributed to Joanna Liu, who hosted as well as organized the event. None of this would have been possible due to her hard efforts. We hope to see many more events in the future and many more additions to the Voice K family.

Magazine is the voice of kids

Voice K presents a journalism award to Wendy Wang.
Article copied from Mississauga News
Article by Jan Dean

Being an editor is child's play for Joanna Liu. In fact, she's editor-in-chief of Voice K, the Mississauga-based magazine that's written by children, for children.

Liu, 24, has tutored kids for years at the Golden Key Cultural Centre, a tutoring facility at 3558 Erindale Station Rd. that's owned by her parents. That gave her space to work and ready access to a team of journalists between 7-15.

"It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be to start the magazine," said Liu.

The easy part was the name. Voice K stands for "Voice of Kids."

Some 13 months later, there are 15 young reporters contributing toVoice K, which gets its story leads from about  25 local organizations.

It's been a lot of work for the young editor, who still works for the Golden Key Culture Centre and is also completing an internship in marketing at the Mississauga Food Bank.

Liu, who has lived in Mississauga for a decade, is good at multi-tasking. She speaks Chinese, English and Japanese. She studied arts management at University of Toronto and public relations at Humber College. Along the way she fit in some journalism courses.

At Voice K, she's teaching her cub reporters about interviewing techniques and magazine writing.
"The kids were shy at first about asking questions, but they've learned a lot," she said.

They also love what they're doing. Wendy Wang, 13, is a Voice Kjournalist who says it's exciting to meet new people and see her work published.

The magazine publishes original short stories, reports on events, and assessments of current trends from a kid's point of view.

After publishing online for months, Liu used a $2,000 donation from her parents to publish paper editions of Voice K.

Now she's applying for grants in hopes of building a broadcasting studio for Voice K.

"It would be so awesome to catch our reporters on film actually doing their interviews," said Liu.

Liu has also pitched her idea for a broadcasting studio to the Aviva Community Fund, which backs ideas that are chosen through several rounds of online voting. Those who submit the winning ideas get anywhere from $5,000 to $150,000 to make them reality. The second round of voting started Oct. 22. At the heart of Voice K, is a desire for constant growth and development, with each little journalist and/or author improving his or her craft (whatever it might be, e.g. writing, reporting, reading, etc.) whilst simultaneously providing a valuable resource for kids of all ages and from all over the GTA to read and learn from.

There is nothing quite like seeing your name in print, and all that hard-work and energy amount to something so worthwhile. It can be an exhilarating experience; one that we hope to share with more bright and talented young reporters and writers.

Voice K aims to become an even larger platform for kids, showcasing their unique, informative and often quite humorous voices more effectively through a larger media outlet.  We hope to expand our reach whilst continuing to provide a diverse, social learning experience for everyone involved in new and more exciting ways.

We've given our journalists the chance to see their name in print, now we want to focus on capturing their little faces on screen, behind the camera, starting with a series of online episodes, conducting interviews and reporting on different events.

We hope to build a studio within our current building and transform it into a news station for children. But we can’t do it without the support of other people like us who believe in the power and value of a child’s voice and the insurmountable possibilities of that voice’s range when given the proper guidance and allowed enough room to grow.
